Filling your pool…

Our pool gets drained to about 50% of it’s capacity each year. That was the advice we got the first year we had it inspected and it works for us. BUT, that means every year we need to fill the pool back up. If you have never done this before, here are two things to consider:

  1. Filling with your garden hose is a costly, lengthy process. Especially if you have to add anywhere over 10,000 gallons, you will feel it… slowly.
  2. When you fill water from a residential tap, most water suppliers also charge for the sewer services on the back end.

To make this process better you could either ship in water (also rather costly) or pull it from a fire hydrant if you have one close by. This is the option we elect for every year. We simply go to our water service office and ask for meter, pay our deposit (about 90% of that deposit gets refunded) and go hook up to our local hydrant. Usually the water department provides a wrench to use so you don’t damage the hydrant… it’s important to leave it the way you found it! Now the pool owner is responsible for the hose, and once again, Amazon has you covered: https://amzn.to/44bR94c

This is fire department grade hose so quality is not an issue, and the connections are standard. When getting your meter, talk to your water service office about proper hydrant operation and discuss the connections you have to prevent damage to anything or anyone. It also doesn’t hurt to flush the hydrant before hooking up the hose and filling your pool – again the water company/service will can tell you how.

Need a wrench? Just in case the water service office doesn’t have one, this one will be plenty to turn on and off your hydrant. https://amzn.to/3JtlUb5
